Tips for building successful Squidoo pages

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

Promoting your website using social networking sits is one of the most popular method to promote your website today. This week, UK Webmaster Forum members have been discussing how to use Squidoo to promote your website.
A new UK Webmaster Forum member, Roo contributed a very detailed tips and info on how to build a successful Squidoo page, excerpts:

I’m maybe not the most experienced or successful squidoo member, I’ve never got in the top 100 (overall, top 100 per category is easy in comparison!), but I’ve come close a couple of times and quite a few of my lenses get a good amount of traffic and some even earn me money! Hopefully I can share with you some tips to improve our output on squidoo. I’ll cover a couple of things a few people seem to have in common, but I’ll try and keep it short!

Modules – these are the bits that come pre-formatted with titles and suggestions for what goes in them – Make sure you do alter the default title of each module – If you don’t want to put anything in the module, delete it. – Have a look and see what modules are available and what they do, there’s dozens, if not hundreds! (many, many, many more than previously mentioned – just go to add module and scroll thru the tabs, each of which usually has a few pages too)

Content – same rules apply here as they would anywhere, without unique content you can forget about visitors, and the more content the better. If you have a lot of text, split it up and create a few more text/write modules to put it in. (it’s rumored that search engines like this as they give emphasis to the module headers in results), Add pictures to each write module, you know a sea of text isn’t inviting.

Affiliate marketing – Feel perfectly free to make it as commercial as you like, include the same affiliate ads that you have on your website or add others. The only restriction here is it has to be HTML, no java or iframes, no gambling links, and a few other common sense conditions. Avoid making it too spammy as if reported as spam it may get deleted along with your account. If you’re new to affiliate marketing using squidoo’s product modules maybe a good start, though as the bucks mount up (they pay in dollars by paypal), you may start to resent them taking about 50% of it! Amazon and ebay modules do tend to perform well, though there are alternatives to using the squidoo ones. Squidutils provides a nice tool to create similar links to amazon which you can add your own affiliate id to and link to the UK amazon, which the normal squidoo module won’t. The only downside using that tool is they take 20% of your clicks! You can also generate Ebay RSS feeds with your affiliate code and drop these in the RSS module to great effect!

There’s dozens of links I could place here to give you tips, show you tutorials and give examples, though am not sure I can post links being a newbie! Where I’d recommend you starting was by having a look at the top performing lenses by seeing what’s in the top 100 of the category you’re interested in and seeing what they look like.
I’d also recommend looking at some of the squidoo tutorials, there’s a great one on basic squidoo html, one on advanced squidoo html, one on tweaking the css, just for a start and these will really show you how to alter the look and feel of a page and optimise the html/css available. One that I’d plug, (cos i made it!), is one about using ebay rss feeds with your affiliate id.

SEO Contest 2008

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

It’s been a very exciting time there at UKWW. With our community growing daily with new members of the SEO, Web Design, and Webmaster niches, I’d like to talk about one of the reasons why there is much excitement lately. You see, it is due to our February 1st kick off of the SEO Contest 2008, for which the winner gets a whopping $1,000 USD award. The roster has many SEOers (professionals and hobbiests) today, and growing.

This Search Engine Optimization contest which is being sponsored by the UKWW is being run and maintained by the forum facilitator and it’s admin to make sure both the rules are strictly followed as well as the custom scripts results are 100% accurate. And speaking of the scripts, we can give a big hand to our fellow UKWW members for it’s creation.

There has been a huge buzz with the SEO community over the cash prize that will be awarded to the winner of the contest. The prize itself is the icing on the cake for the winner, who gets the bragging rights on being the Best SEO of 2008. But of course the $1K is allot of icing!

Some of the contestants have purchased new domains specifically on their entries, while other have opted to create sub-domains and sub folders. One rule of the contest states that the entry URI must be newly created specially for the contest. I can’t wait to see the results, so we can see what techniques, work better than others as far as on page optimization goes. There is allot to gain as far as seeing what these techniques are that made it possible for the winners (as well as the top 5 entries).

Will that contestant investing heavily in back links see the $1k grand prize? Will on page factors make or break an entry? I can’t wait to see the results!

Social networking as an Internet marketing strategy

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Over the last few years social networking has been steadily gaining popularity among Internet users. With hundreds of thousands of registered users and new networking sites created daily if used properly social networking can be very powerful source of traffic to your site. Even though traffic from social networking sites may be not the best quality and may not get you many conversions but it’s free and may have positive effect.

I will describe on the example of StumbleUpon since it’s one of the most popular networks how you can take advantage of social bookmarking sites.

One of important steps is creating a “name” for yourself. By “name” I mean not login or screen name. You want to earn respect from other members.
All websites you bookmark or vote for will be listed in your profile, so bookmarking junk will not help your reputation. From this point of view you need to be careful participating in stumble exchanges like it is very popular on Digital Point forums. Always check if site you are voting for worth recommending, same way as would you place link to it on your own website. Try to stay active and submit something new at least once a week.

Second step is creating network of “friends”. More virtual friends you have – better success you can expect from your website marketing efforts.
Every time you submit new site or vote for someone else’s – your vote will show up on your mutual friends pages. If your friend like the resource you have submitted he will likely to vote or comment on it. Instantly your submission will appear on his or hers friends pages. In other words it’s a pyramid effect at it’s best. If your submission is good and gets enough votes to make it to the front page – you better hope that your server can handle amount of traffic you are going to receive…
Join groups and try to find friends with similar interests – this will increase chances that they will agree to be your friends and vote for your submissions.
Don’t spam your virtual friends with some unsolicited offers or constant requests to vote for your submissions – you risk to lose them!

When submitting new resource try to write relevant title and detailed descriptions. First it will work as a link bait inviting users to visit your site for more information. Second – you will get back link to your site with relevant content and key phrase as an anchor. In addition to sending extra traffic to your site these bookmarks on social networking sites will have positive effect on your website SERPs.

One more time I suggest to be careful with participating in vote exchanges or purchasing votes – most of the time it’s useless since these “paid” visitors are not interested in the content of your site and most likely don’t have many virtual friends who would trust theirs recommendations. If you decided to try one of those exchanges I would suggest to check other peoples threads instead of starting your own. This way you can chose who are you voting for and than ask to return the favor (better by PM).

This is basically it. There are some differences between social networking sites but principle is the same – submit new resources and rate resources submitted by other users. I have been using social networking technique to promote many different sites and result was always the same – increased traffic.
