A site that has a blog attached to it, has much more value on Google, and also for users, who can find much more useful information, under the same brand. For example, the UK Webmaster Blog is linked to the UK Webmaster Forum and it helps a lot in the promotion of the forum.

As per the above comments it's content that Google loves the seo advantages of a blog are also that:
- There are places where you can only submit blogs
- Blog content can be different in nature to your main website allowing you more flexibility in terms of the phrases that you target

I can see nowadays there are more and more sites with blogs. It can bring more traffic to the sites and increase the chance to sell your products.
