I'd say for both a marketing and search rankings point of view, Articles are the best. You can write a well constructed 500 word article in an hour or so then use software which submits to most of the popular article directories.

Directories are also good but I wouldn't advise doing it manually yourself as it is far too time consuming.

Forums are also a good place, it really depends on what you are aiming to do. Are you looking to gain links for search rankings? If so - it's a win-win. Join forums in your market niche and post informatively, you'll get the backlinks and the traffic from forum users.

Blogging - initially a very good concept but in my honest opinion, it's been overdone. Far too many scraper sites and guys out to steal your work, so is usually a waste of time in the end. Still, a very good way of creating new content and targeted traffic.

Linking isn't hard, its very easy how it all works, yet many do it for the wrong reasons.

Firstly, forget chasing PR. It's for entertainment and ego trips - it won't make you any money.

The aim of any website is to attract traffic - the right traffic, that turn into buyers that spend money. (they won't care about pagerank!, I assure you of that).

How to get the correct traffic

Build an authority website, a hub for your industry, this will be a platform where everyone visits for information about a sector. Build a site that provides information, people don't search to buy advertising, they look for information, so a site needs to provide this, and be the authority.

SEO your website, use keywords that fit exactly to your industry.

Exchange links with related websites. This is okay, but has taken a big hit in the last 2 years, and combined with Google discounting unrelated links and devaluing link swap pages, it will not be easy. Still do it, just keep it on-target for the links to have value, but you'll need more to have the effect it used to have.

Expect to pay for everything - you have no choice here, as the best websites have the power, and not you. No point in getting some free link on a crap website, it will actually work against you. Not all links are expensive, many links, especially directory ones are very reasonable, and expect to pay from £10 to £50ish, but that's a good deal bcos you are paying for an entire year and the links/web space are powerful! You will need to spend time hunting down the really good sites, but this is the nature of the beast, and bcos of the way search engines are built, you really have no choice...... so just get on with it. No pain - No gain!

    Recommend Us tool

Get one of these, put it on your homepage and watch word of mouth increase.

    Blog

Get a blog. This allows you to talk about YOUR website, you can add site news, keep visitors informed about offers, happenings etc. It also provides a way to add content which is food for the hungry search engines.

    Testimonials

If you have these, then you must add them to your website, preferably the homepage.

    Explain your service

Idea here is to say what you do. Put this on your homepage and insert some keywords, then link them to main or internal site pages. Again, more food for search engines......

Get a Bookmark Us link. This is a simple link that when clicked, it will add you to the Favourites drop down menu in Internet Explorer.
