For traffic, I don't think it's that great, you'll mostly find that your articles are viewed by other people in your niche.

Although for links they're ok, but when your article is created it has 0 PR, although yes PR flows within sites, you won't see the full benefit like you would if your link was placed on the home page of the site.

But the most successful way seems to be writing for syndication, where other people repost your article and links to it on their site.

Of course yes! nobody submit a single article to a single article directory man.

If you have articles sites allow you do follow links then you must use it. It give you benefit for link and traffic both. Article content must be unique. People are in habit on posting one article to multiple sites. Its no more unique then. One article one site, that is all.

Article directories are considered a source of links and traffic as well.
