The most common mistake is to fall in the Black SEO trick. It's easy, you get nice promises, ecc, but Black SEO may bring you some quick results, but 100% you will be banned.
Then another mistake is to pride yourself that you know all the SEO tricks and not to study new techniques.

I have a newbie question - you mention validating - I presume this means make sure the site validates? Or are you saying don't waste your time on it?
A second question - how much is excessive use of keywords in content - are we saying 20% and more or keep it in the 10-15% mark with good spread.

Some good advice there. The main thing to remember is that what's good for your visitors is also good for the search engines.
Visit your site as though you were a new visitor, and make note of the user experience. If it wasn't your site, would you stay or leave, and if the latter, what is turning you off about the site.
