There has been a major shift in things, but I think it was more of a geo thing. I am not sure if it has been named or recognised as a global update yet. All of my own and client sites have not lost ground, and those that were not at the top have moved up.

Something to note though is this little gem from Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google). In the WSJ he wrote

As Google grows, so does its need to store and handle more Web site information, video and e-mail content on its servers. "Those machines are full," Mr. Schmidt, the chief executive, said in an interview last month. "We have a huge machine crisis."

Put simply, Google is full, despite epending $1.5 BILLION in the last 12 months on infrastructure.

Thanks for that OWG, I am not surprised Google is running out of hardware, giving all the rubbish they index and the "mine is bigger than yours" contest they used to do with Yahoo. The geo IP info you gave me is very useful, that could be a good pointer to why one of the sites is not doing well, the contents is targeted at UK users but its hosted outside UK.

    hi,

there is an update, but the update is not a small update. lots of sites have dropped from google . the older sites will be the most trusted site and older sites will get the prime priority in google rather than the new sites.

yes there has now been a massive problem at Google (they have addmitted to it), but I would not agree with your assessment. We have been discussing this a lot and there is no real pattern to what has happened. I have seen old sites disappear, new sites disappear.

This is not helped by the fact that the site:domwin.com search is broken (Google have admitted this).

Many people have reported that their site has gone from Google when it hasn't it is just reported as gone. Other sites HAVE gone, as the traffic from Google has dried up (a sure way to tell, and always the best measure rather than some dumbass search operator ).

Many people have reported that the pages indexed dropped, but traffic remained the same (sure fire way of knowing the operator was broken) Others reported the site was moved to suplimental, others that the site and traffic dropped.

What we DO know for sure is what Matt cutts has posted on his blog, saying that offtopic links, and poor off topic inbound links will now harm you. We also know that Google has DEFINITELY Reported that reciprocal links have been made worth very little, in fact that if most of your linking is reciprocal then you will likely be downgraded in big daddy. (although I have seen this to not be the case).

This is the first update that has ever affected any of my sites. I can report that my rugby forum used to have 30,000 pages spidered, has never been involved in buying or selling links, has never been involved in link trading of any kind. Yet last week had all of its pages bar 600 or so dropped!

Traffic stayed the same however, with Google sending me over 1000 referrals from search a day. This was when I realised that it was a reporting thing as well as an actual page drop thing. The site has now been re-included and went up over the last few days to now recording 10000 pages indexed. Traffic is steady and has not changed. (apart from having gone up by over 20% pre update).

There has been a LOT of specualation about what has gone on, and it is odd that it is hard on the heels of Eric Shcmidt admitting they have a machine crisis.
