Getting to the top will depend on the amount of competition for your chosen keywords.

The last few places up the ladder can be the hardest to achieve - its all about the content & inbound links...a quite a bit of work to make it happen.

Build relevant backlinks, as many as you can, and keep your site updated with something fresh every day. All these of course after a well done on-page optimization.

I don't think it is all that difficult to achive first page google. I did it in three days with one of my sites. It had no backlinks at all, just some heavy keywording and a sitemap!!
