There are really some good encoding solutions ( not cheap ) that can encode your PHP scripts based on IP address(es), MAC or website(s) Url.

ioncube offer a service where they will encode files for you for a much cheaper rate than buying the software.... hope that helps

Probably the best solution. If you write your own encoding app it's harder to be decoded by someone.You can always write web apps in c/c++ that will encode it quite well
