It's used especially for mathematical equations. If you would like to make any number to power of another you make SUP for power. If you would like to make logarithm with any base you can use SUB. Moreover even for squer meters you can use sup to make them more readable.

Plus, you can use them for the transcription of some languages. For example, if you want to put some hitite texts on your page, you can use SUP for showing the Sumerian determinatives.
