I've tried phpbb, bbpress (which is based on Wordpress) and vB. I think vB is the best for serious communities, but bbpress could be a future contender (some big forums such as the technorati forums use it, and there's no spam as it uses akismet.

I agree about the vB part, however I've not had much experience with BBPress, I heard there's a modification available that lets you integrate your Wordpress powered blogs with this forum platform.

Does it have any features, or is it a plain forum with basic features?

I don't agree, there are better bulletin platforms out there, phpBB2 requires lots of modding before it has some features other platforms support, vBulletin or IPB are great platforms.
