Definitely both. I've always liked to design, at the begging I was more into graphic stuff but then coding appeared to be exciting as well. I think it's cool to build something that will live and grow. If someone learns web design but it's only about money for him then he isn't a truly good web designer, sadly, there are many such web designers who aren't real passionates of webmastering nowadays.
