Mostly, things like the yellow pages, in terms of searching are now an outdated form. Therefore, we have the growth of Internet presences. Any business, that wants to survive today and maintain competitiveness, will need to have a firm internet presence. With that, come the website and the need to get a great web developer.

The Internet is still seen as in its birthing stage compared to what it could possibly become in the future. Today, web developers are already in great demand and paid a pretty price for their services. As the growth of the Internet, businesses and combining the two continues, the rise of the need for web developers will too.

If you're searching for someone and you want your own site I'd say go for web designer or developer. There's very little between them but developer suggests a little more depth whereas a designer, being more artistic/creative may be more concerned about the look and feel, less about the functionality.
