Default How do you help a 1st grader crying out for some attention without giving in to her?

I have a young niece in first grade who's parents have just gotten a divorce. She is acting out by coloring on things she knows she shouldn't. (The floor, walls desk, etc..) talking back to the teacher, and other such things. Neither my sister nor I want put her needs above that of her siblings but we can't ignore her either and we aren’t sure punishment is the best solution either. Advice? Web pages, etc.

I don't think that doing stuff you read about on the internet is a good thing.

First you or your sister should sit down and talk to her. The best thing is if both her parents talk to her about this. My parents got divorced when I was very young and I know can be very bad for a small kid. Only the parents or close family can help her to get over this.
