Help with contact form

Hello, can anyone help me?
I am a complete novice at this and I have a contact form in a website that won't send the content on the form directly to a nominated email address - it just opens up an email with the address and the content of the form in it ready to send! It's baking my noodle and I am a complete dunce with programming. If anyone can help please can it be in simple terms :-)
